Swimming Program Information

The LPAA Swim program follows the new guidelines of the Red Cross Swim program, featuring two exciting Swimming and Water Safety programs for your children.


Red Cross Swim: Preschool (for children ages 3-5 years)

This program allows your children to take lessons based on their age and abilities.

Each level is built around an aquatic species theme and has its own mascot, which will make learning engaging and fun for young children.

Assisted by an Instructor, preschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on and around the water, and entries and floats in deep water.

Red Cross Swim Preschool – Sea Turtle (3 to 5 years)
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Jump into chest-deep water (with assistance)
- Front float 3 sec (assisted)
- Back float 3 sec (assisted)
- Basic kick on front (assisted)
- Front swim (assisted)

Red Cross Swim Preschool – Salamander (3 to 5 years)
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Open eyes underwater (attempted)
- Front float 3 sec
- Back float 3 sec
- Front glide with kick 5 sec (assisted)
- Back glide with kick 5 sec (assisted)
- Front swim for 2 metres (assisted)

Red Cross Swim Preschool– Sunfish Level (3 to 5 years)
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Jump into deep water (assisted)
- Front glide with kick for 1 metre
- Back glide with kick for 1 metre
- Front float 5 sec in deep water
- Back float 5 sec in deep water
- Front swim for 2 metres

Red Cross Swim Preschool – Crocodile Level(3 to 5 years)
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Jump into deep water
- Front glide with kick for 2 metres
- Back glide with kick for 2 metres
- Front swim 5 metres
- Back swim 5 metres

Red Cross Swim Preschool – Whale Level (3 to 5 years)
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Jump into deep water
- Front glide with kick for 5 metres
- Back glide with kick for 5 metres
- Side glide with kick for 5 metres
- Front swim 7 metres
- Back swim 7 metres
- Learn to throw assists


Red Cross Swim Kids
(for 6-year-old children and older)

This 10-level program for school aged children will help swimmers develop all six swimming strokes (front and back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly, sidestroke), actively learn how to be safe around the water, and increase their fitness and endurance through fun activities. Children will be challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which will be a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 1 (Age 6 and older)
This is the entry level for any child who can swim and may not have taken the Red Cross Swim Preschool lessons. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool area and introduces floats and glides with kicks. Children build their endurance by improving distance.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Shallow water entries/exits with head submerged
- Front glide with kick for 5 sec
- Back glide with kick for 5 sec
- Rollover glide for 6 sec (assisted)
- Distance swim for 5 metres

Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 2
A second orientation level which helps the child build skills in front and back swims. Children are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Endurance is built on flutter kicking with assisted glides.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Deep water activities (assisted)
- Front glide with kick for 5 metres
- Back glide with flutter kick for 5 metres
- Rollover glide for 6 sec
- Flutter kick for 15 m (assisted)

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 3, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!


Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 3
This level provides an introduction to front crawl as well the foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and children will work on floats and changing direction. Endurance is achieved by building strength in flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Deep end floats for 5 sec
- Front glide with kick for 10 metres
- Back glide with flutter kick for 10 metres
- Side glide for 5 sec
- Front crawl for 5 metres

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 4, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!


Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 4
The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Deep water treading for 45 seconds
- Kneeling dive
- Front crawl for 10 metres
- Back glide with flutter kick for 10 metres
- Distance swim for 25 metres

Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 5
Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives receive an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Deep water treading for 1 min
- Stride dive
- Front crawl for 15 metres
- Back crawl for 15 metres
- Intro to whip kick on back for 5 metres
- Distance swim for 50 metres

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 6, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!


Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 6
Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75- metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Deep water treading for 1.5 min
- Front dive
- Front crawl for 25 metres
- Back crawl for 25 metres
- Elementary back stroke
- Head-first sculling on back for 5 metres
- Distance swim for 75 metres

Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 7
Level 7 continues to build skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions, and participate in timed treading water for increasing endurance. Endurance is built through timed treading water and a 150-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Water rescues
- Front crawl for 50 metres
- Back crawl for 50 metres
- Elementary back stroke for 25 metres
- Head-first sculling on back for 10 metres
- Whip kick on front for 15 metres
- Distance swim for 150 metres

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 8, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!



Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 8
Level 8 provides an introduction to the breaststroke, foot first surface dives, and rescue entries. Children learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, and the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and 300-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Rescue breathing
- Front crawl for 75 metres
- Back crawl for 75 metres
- Elementary back stroke for 50 metres
- Breast stroke for 25 metres
- Tread water for 3 min
- Distance swim for 300 metres

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 9, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!



Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 9
Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives and standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences, and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Rescue breathing and self-rescue
- Front crawl for 100 metres
- Back crawl for 100 metres
- Breast stroke for 25 metres
- Head-first shallow dive
- Distance swim for 400 metres

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 10, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!


Red Cross Swim Kids: Level 10
Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, and head-first and feet-first shallow dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim.
At successful completion of this level, a child will be able to:
- Head-first surface dive and underwater swim 2 metres
- Front crawl for 100 metres
- Back crawl for 100 metres
- Breast stroke for 50 metres
- Elementary back stroke for 50 metres
- Butterfly stroke for 10 metres
- Distance swim for 500 metres

If your child was currently working on Aquaquest Level 11 or 12, then this is the equivalent level under the new program!
